This site focuses on the north east of the island, served mainly by the port and airport of Olbia for Gallura and Nuoro, although Porto Torres ferry services, the Corsica ferry between Bonifacio and Santa Teresa di Gallura, and Alghero airport are also within reach.

ARRIVING BY SEA
Ferries run from the Italian mainland to a variety of Sardinian
ports including Olbia, Golfo Aranci, Porto Torres and Cagliari.
Main routes into Olbia for the north of Sardinia are from Civitavecchia,
Livorno, Genoa and Piombino. Frequencies and duration of voyages
varies through the year: for more information see the various
ferry companies’ timetables, which include:

It’s also possible to take the ferry into Sardinia from
the southern tip of Corsica, via the short Bonifacio – Santa
Teresa di Gallura route.
GETTING AROUND
Buses & Trains
Public transport links most towns and tourist areas, with extra
services running during the summer. Outside of summer, rural areas are generally badly served by public transport.
For buses/coaches between urban areas there is the public ARST company, plus various private operators running between centres such as Olbia and Nuoro:
www.arst.sardegna.it
Summer buses run from the airports to the main
tourist areas, for example from Olbia Airport to the Costa Smeralda and to Nuoro province.
www.sunlines.org
www.turmotravel.it
For buses from Olbia airport to the centre of
the city, there is a regular bus service with tickets available
onboard, from just outside the terminal building. It stops in
the centre of Olbia, very close to both train and ARST bus stations.
Local buses also run to and from the Porto Turistico ferry port
on the short trip to Olbia centre.
For trains, plus some additional bus routes, see the service from
FdS:
www.ferroviesardegna.it
Trenino Verde
A great way to see the interior of the island is via the Trenino
Verde network of trains which wind their way along some of the island’s
most scenic routes during the summer:
Mandas - Arbatax
Isili Sorgono
Macomer –Bosa
Nulvi – Tempio – Palau
As well as the towns there are small halts at various points along the route, making some of the more remote areas accessible. For rural hotel accommodation served by a nearby trenino verde halt, see Rural Accommodation - Valkarana Hotel.
www.treninoverde.com
There is an extremely helpful website at www.getaroundsardinia.com which gives information on how to see the island using public transport, including hints on understanding timetables and some suggested itineraries.
Bicycle
Cycling is very popular during the summer. Most airlines
flying into Sardinia let you bring your own bike – Bike Hire is available at various points round the island.
Boat Hire
To explore the area around the Maddalena peninsula and northern coast by self-drive RIB, see the information on our page
Cannigione boat hire.
CAR HIRE
All the main international car hire companies plus some local
companies operate from Olbia and the other airports, as well as
the major towns and tourist resorts.
