Exploring Sardinia from Valkarana

Walks

Take a path up the hill above the hotel and discover the prehistoric tower which commanded a defensive position with views in all directions for the ancient inhabitants defending their territory.  Or follow the track round the hill to the nuraghi, another of the area’s archeological sites;  this ancient land has signs of its earliest inhabitants and civilisations scattered throughout Gallura.

Horseriding

A good way to discover the hills, and one which follows a long Sardinian tradition of horsemanship.  Valkarana can organise trips with local stables, either for a day or to explore the area more thoroughly on a longer trek.

Trenino Verde

The trenino verde (see naturalSardinia.com – getting around) tourist train stops at a halt right outside the hotel grounds;  this historic train winds its way between Palau and Tempio during the summer months, and is definitely the best way to see the scenery.  Take the train either for a trip to the islands of La Maddalena via the ferry from Palau, or to explore historic Tempio Pausania, or hop off along the way.

History

The family that run Valkarana love their area and its history, and are keen to help visitors discover it.  For example, they work with the ethnographic museum at Luras (see naturalsardinia – Gallura) and can arrange special visits, tours and talks for those interested.
